Mr. Avendano is the head dyer for the Mixtec Weavers and Dyers of Oaxaca, Mexico. The tixinda purple ink is taken from the endangered Purpura Pansa sea snail and is used to dye beautiful hand woven articles of clothing and fabric. The dyers are members of the Cooperative de Tintoreros de Pinotepa de Don Luis, the only place where this traditional practice continues.
